Common Dolphin Species in the Algarve

Several dolphin species can be found in the rich, biodiverse waters of the Algarve. The three most frequently sighted species are:

Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis):
The most widely spotted dolphin in the Algarve, common dolphins are known for their lively and acrobatic behavior. These dolphins feature a distinctive hourglass pattern on their sides, with a combination of dark grey, yellow, and white markings. They are highly social and are often seen traveling in large pods, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. They frequently approach boats, riding the bow waves and putting on a spectacular display of jumps and spins for those lucky enough to witness.
Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus):
Bottlenose dolphins are easily recognizable thanks to their robust build, curved dorsal fin, and iconic "smiling" appearance. They tend to live in smaller pods but are known for their curiosity, often swimming close to boats and interacting with passengers. Bottlenose dolphins are larger than common dolphins and can grow up to 4 meters in length. They are intelligent and exhibit complex social behaviors, making them a favorite among dolphin watchers.
Risso’s Dolphins (Grampus griseus):
Less common but still spotted along the Algarve coast, Risso’s dolphins are unique in appearance. They are larger than many other species, with a blunt head and a body that becomes heavily scarred over time due to social interactions and encounters with other animals. These dolphins are usually light grey or white and can be found in deeper waters.
